Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment: School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering. LABORATORY INTERNS / ASSISTANTS (Grade AD12) (FIXED PERIOD CONTRACT). The School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering has vacancies for two Interns/Assistants. The contract duration will be one year, with a possibility of extending to a second year, depending on the availability of funds. The School has various laboratories which include the following: Coal, General Engineering, Analytical, General Chemistry, Extractive Metallurgy, and Physical Metallurgy. The primary scientific field in which the Interns/Assistants will work is engineering and the specific laboratory allocation will dictate the secondary scientific field. The School is looking for one Laboratory Intern/Assistant in Analytical / General Chemistry and one Laboratory Intern/Assistant in Physical Metallurgy / Foundry / Mechanical Testing. It is envisaged that each Laboratory Intern/Assistant will be assigned to laboratories that will provide them sufficient opportunity to develop the skills necessary to perform proficiently in a chosen discipline. The Interns/Assistants will be required to operate equipment to assist with undergraduate practical work, as well as postgraduate research and will receive appropriate training to operate the various instrumentation, methodologies and analysis required in the School. The School aims to provide some opportunity to expose the incumbents to research initiatives and thereby gain valuable exposure to research methodologies and processes, facilitating the development of research, instrumental, machinery, systems and process in the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering. The appointments will be fixed-period contracts funded by an external grant.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Undergo training in selected equipment and techniques; • To assist with developing standard operating procedures for all techniques and to assist with operation and training of postgraduate students on the various instrumentation; • To assist with the operation of standard equipment; • To assist with compilation of laboratory asset lists and maintaining and stores inventories; • To assist with final year undergraduate student research projects by providing training and assistance to students in the various techniques; • To assist researchers in their work; • To assist in the implementation of practical laboratory operating and safety systems, necessary to maintain highly functional laboratories.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: • Minimum Matric, but preferably an advanced technical diploma or qualification. No required experience, but at least 5 years or more practical industry experience in the areas of Metallurgical Engineering and Analytical Chemistry will be an advantage.
